Room makeovers: Why “DIY” solutions may not be enough

I’ve recently had the pleasure of doing some room makeovers – they’re so much fun, and the results are always surprising, no matter how clearly I’ve tried to envision the finished product in advance.

My favorite reactions are from the spouses/partners who insist they don’t need a room redesign, or don’t understand just what difference a professional room makeover will make.  By the end of the day, they’re always the biggest converts!

Here’s why it pays to hire a professional:

• A room makeover isn’t rocket science….  But remember, just because you’re smart doesn’t mean the answers are obvious!  Ultimately, you don’t know what you don’t know.
• Most people unconsciously limit themselves by following a certain few “design rules.”  They never realize just how many options there really are….
• And if they don’t know all the rules, it’s really hard to know how or when to follow, tweak, or break them!
• A redesign follows a specific whole-room plan of action, where each element that’s added to the space leads naturally to the next.
• Most people redo their rooms in a piecemeal fashion, and as a result those rooms never feel cohesive or complete. (This is usually where most people go wrong.)
• A Redesigner’s job is to think outside the box for you, and find creative whole-room solutions that work.
